Altberg Desert Microlite Boot
Altberg Desert boots are made with suede leather and ideal for hot dry conditions, hence the word desert. In addition to being incredibly lightweight the Desert Microlite is high at the leg which is unlined for minimal moisture absorption and maximum breathability. The sole has strong torsional and flex resistance which is ideal for rough desert terrain, and the Micro layer in the sole gives excellent shock absorption. Altberg made their first Desert boots in 1994 for a unit of soldiers from Catterick Garrison going on exercise to Oman. On their return they gave some great feedback on improvements could be made and that’s how the now legendary Altberg Desert Microlite was developed. Since then it’s been used on active service by soldiers in Kuwait, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan and it’s still a very popular Desert boot.
Altberg Desert Tabbing Boot
The Desert Tabbing boot was developed from the microlite version in 2009 as a more robust running/tabbing version of the legendary Desert Microlite. The last / forme (footshape) upon which it is made is the A-Forme®, which uses running shoe dynamics and technology. The leg of the boot is lower than the desert microlite to enhance mobility when running on desert slab or rough terrain. Underneath the foot the sole gives good torsional stability and shock absorption, and the breathability of the boot is excellent. The suede and Cambrelle® lining combination allows air circulation and fast drying. They now come in the SF version which means all lace loops, no hooks.
Which boot should I buy?
If you have not worn boots before try the Tabbing version. If you have narrow feet then the microlite version may suit you better. The Tabbing is lower at the ankle and has no lace hooks just in case you want a boot less likely to tangle in parachute cords etc.
Sizes
There is some talk about needing a half size bigger in boots than your standard shoes. This is more appropriate for ladies who probably haven't worn thicker socks with their footwear, however, we say start with the size most of your trainers in the wardrobe are.
To sum up, if you are new to wearing boots try the Tabbing version first, they use the latest A-forme technology in the footshape. The tabbing are lower at the ankle so if you prefer the higher boot go for the Desert Microlite.
